Haunted House Protection - Hughes Brothers
It was a chilly October evening, and the Hughes family had decided to visit the local haunted house attraction. The whole town was talking about it—people said it was the scariest one yet. Ellen and Jim Hughes weren’t ones to shy away from some family Halloween fun, so they packed up their four kids—Quinn, Jack, Luke, and their youngest daughter—and headed out.
The sister, only 6 (she’s begged to try it out), clutched her stuffed bear tightly as they approached the looming, creaky house, her eyes wide with both excitement and fear. Quinn, at 16, rolled his eyes at the sight of her bear (not jealous at all) but gave her a reassuring pat on the head.
“You’ll be fine. Just stick with us,” he said, leading the way with his usual quiet confidence.
Jack, 14, grinned down at his little sister. “I’ll scream louder than you, I bet.”
She shot him a look, knowing it was probably true. Jack had a flair for drama.
Luke, the 12-year-old, was already bouncing on his toes, hyped up. “I heard there’s a guy with a chainsaw. Think we can take him?” He was ready to treat the haunted house like some sort of obstacle course. Typical Luke.
Their sister’s heart was racing. Haunted houses weren’t exactly her favorite thing, but with her brothers, she felt a bit braver… or at least she tried to. As they entered the house, the door slammed shut behind them with an eerie creak, and her grip on Luke’s sleeve tightened.
The first room was filled with fog, and a creepy clown mannequin stood in the corner. Quinn being the older brother he is walked ahead, calm as ever, scanning for any jump scares. Jack was grinning ear to ear, but his sister could tell he was on edge. Luke? He was practically daring the clown to move. And then… it did.
The clown jerked forward with a sinister laugh, its eyes glowing red. The sister screamed, and Jack immediately stepped in front of her, arms spread wide like a human shield.
“Whoa, okay! Stay behind me!” Jack said, though his voice cracked just a little. She grabbed onto the back of his hoodie, trusting her brothers to protect her.
Quinn turned back, smirking. “It’s just a guy in makeup. Relax.” He shot the clown a look that seemed to say, You’re not scaring my siblings.
They pressed on, and the next hallway was lined with skeletons. Every so often, one would jump out with a shriek. Luke, undeterred, grabbed one of the skeleton’s bony arms and pretended to have a conversation with it. “No, you look like a bag of bones,” he quipped, trying to make his sister laugh.
She giggled nervously but stayed glued to her brothers, eyes darting everywhere. The tension in the air was thick, and then, suddenly, a chainsaw roared to life. The sound echoed through the hall, and out of the shadows came a masked man wielding it, revving the engine.
Without hesitation, Quinn stepped forward, placing himself between his siblings and the terrifying sight. “It’s fake,” he said calmly, though the chainsaw guy was doing his best to look menacing.
“Let’s just walk through,” Quinn said, giving the guy an unimpressed glance. Jack tugged his sister along quickly, but Luke, of course, couldn’t resist.
“Nice saw, dude!” Luke yelled over the roar, which earned him a shake of the chainsaw and a mock chase. Luke yelped, running ahead, but it was all in good fun. Their sister, however, had her eyes squeezed shut.
Finally, they made it to the last room. It was dark, with a single spotlight illuminating a large, spooky-looking coffin. The air was thick with suspense. The siblings stood still, knowing something was about to jump out at them.
Their sister whispered, “I don’t like this, I don’t like this…”
Quinn, in his typical big-brother fashion, put a steady hand on her shoulder. “It’s almost over. You’re doing great.”
Jack was poised, ready to scream at whatever came next. Luke? Well, Luke was crouched down, looking under the coffin like he could solve the whole thing by figuring out how it worked.
Suddenly, the coffin lid burst open, and a ghoul jumped out with a scream. But before anyone could react, Jack and Luke both lunged toward their sister, blocking her from the ghoul’s reach.
“You stay away from her!” Jack yelled, putting on his best heroic face, despite his own pulse racing. Luke threw an arm out like he was ready to square up with the ghoul.
Quinn, not even fazed, gave the actor a grin. “Nice try, but we’re done here.”
With that, they quickly ushered their sister out of the house and into the cool night air. She was still shaking a little, but surrounded by her brothers, she felt safe.
“You okay?” Luke asked, nudging her with a grin.
“Yeah… thanks for saving me,” she said, looking at each of them gratefully.
Quinn smiled. “Don’t mention it. We’ve got your back.”
Jack slung an arm around her shoulders. “Told you I’d scream louder than you.”
“Yeah, but I think Luke was ready to fight a chainsaw guy,” she laughed.
Luke puffed out his chest. “Oh, I definitely could’ve taken him.”
As they walked back to the car, their sister felt a little braver. With three brothers like hers, even the scariest haunted house didn’t seem so bad after all.
And that’s how the Hughes brothers proved once again that no haunted house, no chainsaw-wielding villain, could mess with their family.
Bonus: Later that night, back home, Ellen and Jim were having a tough time getting their youngest to settle down. The haunted house had spooked her more than she let on, and she kept tossing and turning, eyes darting to the shadows in her room.
“Mom, can you check the closet again?” she asked, clutching her bear.
Ellen sighed softly, giving Jim a look that said, This could be a long night.
Just outside the door, Luke was passing by on his way to bed when he overheard the conversation. He paused, smirked to himself, and bolted down the hall to find Jack.
“Hey, little sis can’t sleep. You up for a mission?” Luke whispered, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Mission?” Jack raised an eyebrow but got up, clearly interested. “We need Quinn.”
Moments later, the three boys crept into their sister’s room, much to her surprise. Luke plopped down beside her, throwing an arm around her shoulder.
“Heard you were having some ghost troubles. We got you,” he said with a grin.
Jack stretched out on the floor dramatically. “Yep, no ghoul would dare mess with all of us.”
Quinn, ever the big brother, dragged in some blankets for Jack and Luke and tossed it on the floor. “We’re not leaving you alone, okay? Just sleep.”
She smiled, finally relaxing. With her brothers piled into the room, Jack and Luke next to her bed and Quinn in her bed, chatting quietly and making jokes, the shadows didn’t seem so scary anymore.
Within minutes, she drifted off, surrounded by her haunted house heroes.

It's Just a Jump to the Left
A MacGyver (2016) One-Shot
Despite the fact that it seems real, that everything makes sense at first glance, that Mac’s body is exactly as screwed up as it should be, Mac doesn’t buy it. Call it suspicion, call it a healthy dose of skepticism, call it trust issues with the universe- Mac doesn’t care. He’s not about to fall for this again. Or, Mac is stuck in a loop of the non-time variety and tries to find his way home, wherever that may be.
